Family and Juvenile Court Practice

Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong recently launched Family and Juvenile Court Practice, a LexisNexis publication and Sentencing Principles in Singapore, a SAL publication. Family and Juvenile Court Practice is the work of 15 Judges and Deputy Registrars of the Family Court.

One of its authors, PDJ Khoo Oon Soo, noted that: “This publication is not a mandatory reference material but we certainly hope that it will be a compelling one. It is, indeed, a useful resource for everyone who uses the services of the Family and Juvenile Court.” CJ Chan praised the efforts by both present and former District Court Judges for going beyond their duties as judges to pen a book. “They have written not to advance their own careers, but for the benefit of practitioners and offenders,” he said.

LexisNexis’ Corporate Social Responsibility program leads the way for Somaly Mam

“Where human trafficking exists, the Rule of Law cannot exist.”
— Andy Prozes, CEO, LexisNexis Group

In the absence of the Rule of Law, vulnerable people such as women and children are exploited through trafficking. That is why Ms Somaly Mam, former victim and now crusader in the fight against human trafficking and child prostitution through her organisations AFESIP and the Somaly Mam Foundation, has become an inseparable part of LexisNexis’ corporate social responsibility efforts in promoting the rule of law.

Thursday, May 21, saw LexisNexis host Somaly in Singapore. Over the next 30 hours, 36,000 people from 12-year-old students to Singapore’s Chief Justice, would hear Somaly’s simple yet hard-hitting message of love, respect and hope set against the backdrop of her ongoing fight against human trafficking and child prostitution.

The Children & Law Conference Opening Ceremony

Organized by the Singapore Law Society and LawAsia, The Children and the Law conference aimed to promote issues involving children and the law in the Asia Pacific region. Somaly’s efforts were recognized by Singapore’s Chief Justice, Chan Sek Keong, who highlighted her work and its relevance to Singapore in his opening speech.

Eradicating Human Trafficking Talk

Somaly sharing her story to a captivated audience

More than 100 professional women spent an intimate Thursday evening with Somaly in a sold-out dialogue session organized by PrimeTime and The Singapore Council of Women’s Organization (SCWO) as part of their Outreach Programme. Somaly’s message reached thousands more through on demand TV and Shin Min News Daily’s coverage of the event.

Interview with News Radio 938 Live (Singapore’s main news station)

Her audience could not see her but they were undoubtedly touched by Somaly's heart-wrenching tales of horror and uplifting message of hope. For 50 minutes, Somaly was a guest on 938Live’s The Living Room, a program with a weekly listening audience of 358,000. On the show, she discussed her past experience in the brothels, AFESIP’s work and what more could be done to help the girls.

National Young Women Leaders’ Day

Somaly transported 850 school girls out of their classrooms and into the brothels of Cambodia, without leaving an air-conditioned auditorium. Organized by Halogen Foundation Singapore, National Young Women Leader’s day was attended by students aged between 12 and 16 years old. At the end of her dialogue session, many hands shot up enthusiastically when the girls were asked if they would like to visit Somaly’s shelters in Cambodia for their next community service project. It was clear that Somaly had given these girls a new meaning to the words “community service”.

Children & Law Conference – Plenary Session

Some 150 legal professionals and academics from the Asia Pacific region attended Somaly’s plenary session titled The Abused Child: Battling Child Labour and Child Prostitution. The session was moderated by Ms Wee Wan Joo, a legal professional active in Singapore’s charity circles. Somaly received enthusiastic responses from the audience as they offered numerous suggestions on how to enhance her efforts against human trafficking and child prostitution.

Combating Human Trafficking: Progress and Future Outlook.

Packed auditorium keenly listening to Somaly’s struggles and challenges

More than 160 academics, professionals and members of the general public became witnesses to Somaly’s story at this dialogue session jointly organized by UNIFEM and INSEAD. Despite recounting her story countless times, Somaly still found it difficult to put her story in words. Yet, it was this very difficulty that conveyed to her audience the immensity and profoundness of her continuing fight against human trafficking. Somaly’s honesty, authenticity and raw emotion made her story a first-hand account which no one in the audience could choose to ignore any longer.
